Columbus Weather: Chance for strong storms Memorial Day weekend - ABC6OnYourSide.com

We have a beautiful holiday Saturday in progress! Clouds will thicken up during the afternoon and evening as a cold front rolls through the state. Look for showers and thunderstorms briefly.

Sunday begins with some sunshine, but showers and thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon and then again in the evening. Monday has some leftover storms in the morning, with another round of storms in the afternoon and evening.

Saturday, Sunday, and Monday are all ALERT DAYS. We need to stay #WeatherAware through the holiday.

  • SATURDAY NIGHT: scattered showers and thunderstorms tapering off, partly cloudy, mild, low 60.
  • SUNDAY (ALERT DAY): mostly sunny in the morning with clouds increasing through midday, showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and again in the late evening, some storms may be strong to severe, high 84.
  • MONDAY (ALERT DAY): scattered showers and thunderstorms during the early morning, sunshine for the middle of the day, showers and thunderstorms returning in the afternoon and evening, high 77.
  • TUESDAY: mostly cloudy, windy, showers, high 75.
  • WEDNESDAY: scattered showers in the morning, mostly cloudy, becoming partly cloudy, breezy, high 70.
  • THURSDAY: mostly sunny, high 73.
  • FRIDAY: mostly sunny, high 75.
  • SATURDAY: partly cloudy, high 80.

A cold front is pushing through the state this afternoon and is likely to generate some showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Visible satellite shows a mix of sun and clouds across Ohio for now.

The atmosphere is mildly unstable and prepared for thunderstorms to pop up with just a little forcing. Those thunderstorms will taper off this evening for a relatively quiet overnight.

We’re expecting at least two rounds of storms on Sunday. The day begins with sunshine, but clouds will begin to increase by midday. Showers and thunderstorms become likely during the afternoon as a line of storms (perhaps even a squall line) races across the state between 4pm and 7pm. Then another round of showers and thunderstorms will develop during the late evening and overnight hours.

The afternoon storms may have an effect on the severity of the evening storms, depending on whether there’s enough time and energy for the atmosphere to recover its instability. But we need to be prepared for severe weather with both rounds. We can expect gusty winds, large hail, heavy downpours enough to create localized flooding, and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

We will stay #WeatherAware through the afternoon and the overnight hours.

Monday begins with leftover showers and thunderstorms, tapering off a little after sunrise. These have a good chance of affecting early-morning memorial services.

Mid-morning through early afternoon, enjoy some sunshine. But showers and thunderstorms return again Monday afternoon and evening, with the chance for strong to severe storms including gusty winds and large hail.

The cold front moves out to the East Coast by Tuesday morning, but then a second front dives into the state. Because of that front, Ohio will have plenty of clouds and a chance for scattered showers throughout the day. Temperatures will feel a little cooler. The rain tapers off Wednesday morning.

High-pressure slides into the region and lingers on Thursday and Friday. We’ll see plenty of sunshine on both days. As the high slowly moves eastward on Saturday, a few extra clouds will roll into the region, but most of the day should remain dry.
