Cleanup continues after severe storms sweep across Minnesota on Memorial Day - MPR News

Updated: 8:35 a.m.

Cleanup continues Tuesday across a wide swath of Minnesota after severe storms — including possible tornadoes — left a trail of major damage on Monday.

That includes Forada, Minn., located on Maple Lake just south of Alexandria.

"Forada took a direct hit," Mayor David Reller told MPR News. "Devastating damage with so many homes and structures and mature trees being uprooted — huge cottonwoods that were at least 3, 4 feet in diameter"

Reller said his roof was damaged and nearly all his trees are gone — and he says some have it much worse.

“There's families where their house — there's nothing left. They just look like it exploded,” he said. “It's just tragic, you know — but thank God nobody was hurt, so now it's just a matter of today is where we're gonna start cleaning up.”

Douglas County Emergency Manager Julie Anderson said dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed in the small community.

"About 75, maybe up to 100 — we are not sure of the level of damage, how many will be destroyed,” she said. “We will be working through that process today and determining what we can do to assist the homeowners in the short term, and then the longer term."

Photos posted by the Alexandria Echo Press showed homes and other buildings with roofs torn off or completely leveled, and debris scattered through the lakeside neighborhood after the Memorial Day storms.

Anderson asked that people from outside Forada stay away from the community, due to downed power lines and ongoing cleanup efforts. She said there also was storm damage in the community of Nelson, east of Alexandria.

To the northeast of Alexandria, the Todd County Sheriff's Office asked people to stay away from the city of Eagle Bend on Monday night due to significant storm damage. Aerial photos showed roofs torn off buildings, trees on homes and major damage to large grain bins in town.

"Emergency crews are actively working to clear buildings and assess damage," the sheriff's office reported in a Facebook post. "There are power lines down and many roads are impassable."

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or fatalities in Forada, Eagle Bend or elsewhere across the state.

Possible tornado touchdowns also were reported Monday near Starbuck and Milan. The National Weather Service's Twin Cities office said it's sending survey teams out to look at damage not just in Douglas County but also in Todd, Pope, Swift, Stevens, McLeod and Carver counties. They'll confirm any tornado touchdowns — and assess the path and strength of those tornadoes.

In addition to reports of tornadoes, a wind gust of 90 mph was reported as storms moved through Appleton, Minn., on Monday afternoon.

To the north, there were reports of trees and power lines down in Otter Tail County; near Pequot Lakes and Breezy Point north of Brainerd; and in the Hinckley area. Building damage was reported in Deer River, northwest of Grand Rapids.

Utility companies across the state reported more than 35,000 homes and businesses without power as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, as crews worked overnight to restore power.

Among the hardest-hit areas were from near Alexandria northeast through the Brainerd Lakes region and on toward Grand Rapids.

Minnesota Power, which provides service to many communities across central and northeast Minnesota, reported more than 11,000 of its customers remained without power early Tuesday and said "early damage assessments by our crews indicate this will be a multi-day restoration event."

The Runestone Electric Association provides power to communities surrounding Alexandria. It reported early Monday evening that it had more than 6,000 customers without power. That number was down to about 3,000 by late Monday night.

The utility urged people to use caution around downed power lines as storm cleanup continues, and to never assume those lines have been de-energized.

The storms also brought heavy rain — including to far northern Minnesota where the battle against flooding in the Rainy River basin continues.

The National Weather Service reported that International Falls set a new daily record Monday with more than 2 inches of rain.

Texas escaped killer Gonzalo Lopez tattoos seen in new photos; manhunt reaches Day 20 - Fox News

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Newly released photos show the tattoos of escaped Texas inmate Gonzalo Lopez, who has been on the lam for nearly three weeks after stabbing a prison bus driver and making his getaway into the desert.

The reward for information leading to the capture of 46-year-old Lopez, an affiliate of the Mexican Mafia who was serving back-to-back life sentences for murder and attempted murder, is currently sitting at $50,000. The U.S. Marshals Service released several photos last week showing Lopez’s various tattoos, including one reading "Aztlan" across his lower back and another with "Gonzo" on his stomach.

The "heavily tattooed" fugitive, described as a White or Hispanic male standing approximately six-foot tall and weighing 185 pounds, also has distinct artwork inked on both arms and his chest.

Lopez escaped custody on May 12 after getting out of his restraints while being transported in a bus for high-risk inmates in a rural area near Centerville, Texas. He is accused of cutting through a metal cage and stabbing a correction officer behind the wheel, temporarily stealing the bus before a second guard shot out the tires and the vehicle crashed. Lopez was last seen running into the woods off Highway 7.

Authorities have been searching for Gonzalo Lopez since May 12.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office issued arrest warrants for escape and aggravated assault against a public servant. Lopez, who has ties to the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio, is considered armed and dangerous and authorities urge the public not to try to apprehend him themselves.

Hundreds of law enforcement on foot and horseback have been involved in the search in what officials have said is considered the largest concentrated manhunt in decades.

In 1996, Lopez was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and received two eight-year sentences. In 2006, he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping and was sentenced to life in prison. Lopez received a second life sentence after he was convicted for attempted capital murder in 2007.

"The Marshals Service has elevated Gonzalo Lopez to major case status and is contributing up to $10,000 toward his capture," U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas Susan Pamerleau said in a May 25 statement. "We sincerely hope this money will serve as an incentive for someone who knows something to do the right thing and contact us. The sooner we get him back into custody, the better."

In addition to the $10,000 from the U.S. Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety is offering $35,000, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is offering $5,000.

Joe Biden visits grave of late son Beau on anniversary of his death - New York Post

President Biden set aside time from his Memorial Day schedule Monday to visit the grave of his late son Beau Biden at a Delaware church cemetery on the seventh anniversary of his death.

Biden, accompanied by first lady Jill Biden, carried flowers as the couple approached the gravesite at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church in Wilmington.

Other family members visiting Beau’s final resting place included the president’s grandchildren and his sister, Valerie Biden Owens.

The family paid their respects after attending morning Mass at the church.

Beau Biden, a veteran of the Iraq war and the former attorney general of Delaware, died of brain cancer on May 30, 2015.

He was 46.

The president frequently references his late son in speeches, usually either to highlight Beau’s military service or show grieving families that he understands the main of premature loss.

“My son spent a year in Iraq, won the Bronze Star, Conspicuous Service Medal,” Biden said Friday during remarks at the US Naval Academy’s commencement exercises. He then added: “I lost him.”

After the visit, the president boarded Marine One for the trip back to Washington.

Beau’s death was merely the latest family tragedy to befall the president’s family. Biden’s 1-year-old daughter, Naomi, and his first wife, Neilia, Beau’s mother, died in a car crash in December 1972. They are buried in the same cemetery.

Justice Dept. to review response to Texas school shooting - The Associated Press

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — The Justice Department said Sunday it will review the law enforcement response to the Texas school shooting, an unusual federal look back prompted by questions about the shifting and at times contradictory information from authorities that have enraged a community in shock and sorrow.

Department spokesman Anthony Coley said the review would be conducted in a fair, impartial and independent manner and the findings would be made public. The announcement came as President Joe Biden was visiting Uvalde, where he and first lady Jill Biden paid their respects at a memorial to the 19 students and two teachers killed at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday.

The goal of the review, which the mayor requested, is “to provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and response that day, and to identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events,” Coley said in a statement.

Handling the review is the department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. It was not immediately clear how the review would be conducted, whether law enforcement officials could be compelled to cooperate in the review and when it might be completed.

Such a review is somewhat rare and most after-action reports that come after a mass shooting are generally compiled by local law enforcement agencies or outside groups. The Justice Department conducted similar reviews after 14 people were killed in a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, in 2015, and after the mass shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ community in U.S. history that left 49 people dead and 53 people wounded.

The frustration, anger and questions about the response from police grew deeper on Friday after authorities revealed that despite repeated 911 calls from students and teachers, the school district’s police chief had told more than a dozen officers to wait in a school hallway. Officials said he believed the suspect was barricaded inside adjoining classrooms and that there was no longer an active attack.

The revelation caused more grief and raised new questions about whether more lives were lost because officers did not act faster to stop the gunman, who was ultimately killed by Border Patrol tactical officers.

Biden has not spoken publicly about the police response to the shooting.

Trump was 'stunned' by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's Republican primary victory: report - Yahoo News

Brad Raffensperger

  • Trump was "stunned" by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's GOP primary win, per the AJC.

  • Raffensperger won the primary with 52 percent of the vote, well ahead of Jody Hice's 33 percent.

  • Trump for nearly two years has criticized Raffensperger's handling of the 2020 election results.

Former President Donald Trump was "stunned" by Brad Raffensperger's victory in the Georgia secretary of state Republican primary over his hand-picked candidate, conservative Rep. Jody Hice, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Raffensperger, who rejected Trump's repeated entreaties to "find" additional votes to invalidate President Joe Biden's statewide win in November 2020, won last Tuesday's GOP primary with 52 percent of the vote, compared to 33 percent for Hice.

The incumbent secretary of state carried most Georgia counties in the primary, only coming up short in the collection of counties that make up the rural-heavy 10th House district, which Hice represents in Congress.

Two senior Republicans with ties to Trump told the paper that the former president expected Raffensperger to go down in defeat against Hice, who staked his campaign on the incumbent's handling of the 2020 presidential election.

But Raffensperger avoided a runoff election by exceeding the 50 percent threshold of victory in the GOP contest, which allows him to immediately begin his campaign for the fall contest. The two Democratic candidates vying to be their party's nominee — state Rep. Bee Nguyen and former state Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler — are headed to a June 21 runoff.

Such a decisive Republican win would have been unthinkable to many observers even a few weeks ago when Trump's hand-picked candidate in the Ohio GOP primary — attorney and "Hillbilly Elegy" author JD Vance — scored a win in a multicandidate field.

As Trump flexed his muscle in contests across the country, the former president relished his ability to exert unparalleled influence over the party.

He hammered Raffensperger and Republican Gov. Brian Kemp regarding the 2020 presidential results in Georgia for nearly two years, arguing that the two officeholders didn't do enough to help him carry the state while also baselessly alleging that fraud contributed to his defeat.

In the months between the November 2020 general election and Biden's inauguration, Trump cajoled both Kemp and Raffensperger to overturn the election results, calling for a special legislative session to install pro-Trump electors who would disregard Biden's statewide victory.

However, Georgia officials found no evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities after conducting several vote counts in 2020.

And as the Raffensperger win and Kemp's landslide gubernatorial primary victory over Trump-backed former Sen. David Perdue demonstrate, the former president's influence still has its limits.

While Trump has continued to propagate his election claims, several prominent voices within the GOP — notably onetime Trump confidant and former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey — have urged the party to look toward the 2022 midterm elections and the upcoming 2024 presidential contest.

Uvalde Mourns Victims of Texas School Shooting in Grief and Anger - The Wall Street Journal

Two people were killed and three are missing after a boating accident in coastal Georgia county - CNN

(CNN)Two people were killed and three others are missing after two boats collided Saturday morning on the Wilmington River, in Georgia's coastal Chatham County, officials said.

The two boats were traveling in opposite directions when they crashed, said Mark McKinnon, a spokesperson for the law enforcement division of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources.
One of the two boats was carrying six passengers while the second carried three, McKinnon said. The other four people involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital in Savannah.
"The identities of those involved is being withheld pending notification of family," the spokesperson said.
Savannah is roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Atlanta.
Authorities are now searching for the sector scan sonar, McKinnon said, a device that's usually used to navigate vehicles and help avoid obstacles. Two helicopters of the US Coast Guard are also helping in the search, McKinnon said.
In a statement on Facebook, Chatham Emergency Services said multiple personnel from the Chatham fire department, EMS, Coast Guard and Marine Patrol were on the scene of the accident, and urged those nearby to "avoid the area."
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

President Joe Biden says young people need these 3 leadership skills to change the world - CNBC

The last two years have been tough for just about everyone. President Joe Biden sees a silver lining to that, especially for recent college graduates.

Speaking at the Naval Academy's commencement ceremony in Annapolis on Friday, Biden said that the class of 2022 is particularly well-equipped to change the world due to the graduates' proven ability to navigate uncertainty. "You faced added challenges to maintain a sense of mission and community and purpose when a global pandemic forced ... literally everything to change," Biden said.

That adaptability has prepared graduates to make sound, informed decisions in an "uncertain world," Biden added, noting that the choices that leaders make will soon become "more consequential than ever before."

"You're graduating at an inflection point, not only in American history, but in world history," Biden said. "Things are changing so rapidly that the next 10 years will be the decisive decade of this century because they're going to shape what our world looks like and the values that will guide it — not just in the immediate future, but for generations to come."

In addition to adaptability, Biden highlighted respect and inclusivity as important leadership traits for young people to lean into, arguing that they're especially valuable right now because the world is realigning. In the past, countries allied with other countries based on geography and conflict, he said — but now, it depends on values, especially ones that prioritize people over power.

"We're living through a global struggle between autocracies and democracies," Biden said. "That's what you're graduating into ... a world that more than ever requires strong, principal, engaged American leadership. Where America leads not only by the example of its power, but the power of its example."

The president acknowledged that the class of 2022 also faces a steeper set of challenges than most graduating classes — including economic turmoil, international conflict and a yet uncalculated pandemic toll. But the leadership skills they've already learned, even unknowingly, could give them a better capacity to ultimately change the world for the better in the coming years.

"No generation of graduates gets to pick what world they're ... going to graduate into," Biden said. "It's already been formed for you, but you must change it."

Exclusive: Federal investigation into Trump fake elector probe expands to multiple states - CNN

(CNN)Federal investigators have interviewed Republicans in Georgia about interactions with people in former President Donald Trump's orbit and his 2020 reelection campaign, as the Justice Department's sprawling criminal probe into efforts to put forth alternate slates of electors to displace Joe Biden electors expands to multiple states.

In one case, FBI agents asked a prominent Georgia Republican whether he had direct conversations with Trump.
"They just asked who talked to me. If anyone from the Trump campaign had been in touch with me. Did Giuliani talk to me? Did Trump talk to me?" said Patrick Gartland, who was set to serve as an elector but dropped out. He recounted how two FBI agents visited his home in Marietta, Georgia, a few weeks ago.
Investigators have sought answers this month from Gartland and others connected to the GOP in Georgia and in Michigan -- both in FBI interviews and in grand jury subpoenas for documents and testimony. Investigators are looking at whether the Trump campaign played a role in the submission of false election certificates, according to people approached by the Justice Department.
The federal probe's aggressiveness in the battleground states around the electors issue has not been previously reported. The DOJ has charged hundreds of rioters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and in recent months, investigators have broadened their scope, seeking information about people in more politically connected circles.

Seeking documents in Georgia

The subpoenas issued to Gartland and others in Georgia are seeking communications with "any member, employee or agent of Donald J. Trump or any organization advocating in favor of the 2020 re-election of Donald J. Trump," including his official campaign.
The subpoenas also seek any communications with more than two dozen named Trump campaign officials, attorneys and Georgia electors. CNN reported Wednesday that a recent subpoena related to the alternate electors sought communications with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Trump campaign lawyer Justin Clark, right-wing attorney John Eastman and others.
A question hanging over the Georgia GOP and the Trump campaign has been whether electors put together fake slates to fraudulently override Biden's win in the Electoral College, or if they believed they were submitting alternative slates in case Trump's court challenges were successful. No court allowed Trump to overturn election results.
A spokesman for Trump did not respond to a request for comment.
No one has been charged with a crime in connection with the alternate slates of electors. A spokesman for the US attorney's office in Washington, DC, which is overseeing the DOJ's investigation into January 6, declined to comment.
A special grand jury in Georgia's Fulton County also is investigating Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election, including the fake electors. This is separate from the federal probe.
The federal subpoenas have been issued to Republicans with a commonality: the people who were set to serve as electors for Trump in 2020 but ultimately backed out.
Gartland had been a state elector, until he became an election board official in 2020 and stepped down from the elector job because it was a possible conflict of interest. The FBI asked Gartland about the episode.
He told the FBI that he didn't have direct contact with anyone in the Trump campaign. "But hey, I'm nobody," he joked in an interview with CNN.
FBI agents have also spoken with Jason Shepherd, another former Georgia GOP party official, multiple times this month, asking if he had any conversations with Trump campaign officials after the election.
Gartland asked Shepherd to fill his spot as an elector, but Shepherd did not ultimately serve in the role. He said he too received a subpoena, for documents dating back to October 1, 2020, and to testify before the federal grand jury this month.
"They were asking about the campaign and the slate in Georgia, trying to figure out what I may have had access to and been privy to," Shepherd told CNN.
Shepherd said he didn't have any documents to turn over, but he encouraged the federal investigators to subpoena other state party officials. He said the electors who did serve may have thought they were helping the Trump administration and the Republican Party.
"The devil really has to be in the minutiae and the details," Shepherd said.
Three other Georgia GOP electors backed out of the slate before January 6 last year -- in addition to Shepherd and Gartland. They either didn't respond to CNN's inquiries or declined to comment.
Shepherd was not asked specifically about communications with Trump, he said, adding he wouldn't have had any to report, anyway.

FBI interview in Michigan

In Michigan, federal investigators have pursued Republicans who had similar roles in 2020 to share information about the organization of the Trump elector slates.
Gerald Wall, a longtime Republican official in rural northern Michigan, said about two weeks ago, he arrived home to find two men in black suits outside of his garage.
One was an FBI agent, the other from the National Archives, he said. "Instead of standing in the garage, I invited them into the house," Wall said.
The federal agents spoke to Wall for about 45 minutes, asking him about the elector slate for Trump in Michigan in 2020, which was submitted to the federal government despite Biden winning there.
Wall, now 85, says he was battling severe coronavirus around the 2020 election, making it impossible for him to serve as an elector at that time. Another GOP member replaced him as an elector.
"I had nothing to do with the signing of the affidavits," Wall told CNN on Friday. The investigators, he said, "just asked me how I felt about that. I said yes, there was irregularities in Michigan."
Before leaving, the agents handed Wall a subpoena for his grand jury testimony, he said. But he told them he wouldn't be able to travel so far and had nothing to share. "I told them in my shape I am not going to Washington," Wall said.
This headline and story have been updated with additional reporting Friday.

These Are the Best Shrimp Recipes, According to Eater Editors - Eater

In the vast sea of shrimp recipes, it can be a challenge to know which ones to try. Shrimp tacos can be prepared a million ways. Seafood chowder recipes are as numerous as they are inconsistent. And what do you do when you want a shrimp recipe that’s a little different than the same-old same-old? Here, five Eater editors have done the work for you, tracking down the best shrimp recipes we can find — from the old but still good standbys to the new greats.

Corn and Shrimp Beignets

Yewande Komolafe, NYT Cooking

If you say beignets three times in a mirror, chances are I will appear. Fried dough covered in confectioner’s sugar? Sign me up. But it was only when I made Yewande Komolafe’s corn and shrimp beignets that I realized how much I’d been missing by only pursuing sweet fried dough: beignets deserve a savory counterpart, too. Adjacent to Rhode Island-style clam fritters, these are perfect as a snack or full-on dinner. I had some trouble with the frying part, as is usually the case, but a splatter screen over the pot will save you from burns. In the end, the juice is worth the squeeze, especially when any kind of dipping sauce will do. I recommend something spicy, though — it will counterbalance the salty, sweet, and brine-y flavors of the beignets. — Dayna Evans, staff writer and editor of Eater Philly

Governor Shrimp Tacos

Pati Jinich

Pati Jinich is my favorite source for Mexican dishes, and I discovered these tacos when testing recipes for a blurb about her latest cookbook, Treasures of the Mexican Table. They’re easy enough to tackle on a weeknight while offering a real depth of flavor from ingredients such as chipotle, poblano, tomato, and Worcestershire sauce. I love how the pan crisping step makes them almost quesadilla-like, and I’ll take any excuse to add Oaxacan cheese to my shopping list. — Missy Frederick, cities director

Cajun Shrimp Boil

Samin Nosrat, NYT Cooking

The first time I had a Cajun shrimp boil, it was at a New York Chinatown restaurant, fresh off a bus from Boston, when I was 18. I was absolutely smitten: As a kid who grew up cracking Dungeness crabs every year on Christmas Eve, I have a distinct appreciation for grabbing seafood with my hands and stuffing it in my face, especially when it’s covered in garlic and paprika. It has been hard to recreate the charm of that first shrimp boil, but I’ve found this New York Times recipe has worked as a jumping off point. Kelly, a dear friend of mine with roots in Louisiana and Mississippi, has helped me fine-tune and save a number of Cajun-Creole recipes I’ve bungled (gumbo, in particular), but I have a specific memory of her salvaging a birthday shrimp boil I almost destroyed. She doesn’t play around with the salt — ”the water should taste unbearably salty,” in her words — and there must be a few shakers of Tony Chachere’s nearby. Pro tip: Boil it outside, if you can help it, or open every single window in your house with the hood fan on full blast. It should be spicy enough that the air will make you wheeze. — Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Eater Portland editor

Easy Seafood Chowder Recipe

Farideh Sadeghin

I wouldn’t classify most chowders as “delicate,” but most chowders I’ve eaten don’t have the nuanced layers of flavor this seafood chowder has, which you build by making your own clam broth, cooking carrots and onions and fennel in it, and then adding white wine. This recipe is a great catch-all for whatever seafood looks good at the store, but I never skip the shrimp — cooking them for just a few minutes in that aromatics-infused cream ensures bouncy, slightly sweet shrimp that are my favorite bites in what is always a big bowl of perfect things. — Bettina Makalintal, senior reporter

Kung Pao Shrimp

J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, The Wok: Recipes and Techniques

It’s rare that a cookbook inspires in me a massive lifestyle change, but in the months since getting J. Kenji Lopez-Alt’s cookbook The Wok my partner and I have devoted ourselves to cooking our way through the book. We haven’t even made it to fried rice or noodles yet, but the kung pao shrimp was an instant hit. Kung pao shrimp is not even my normal order at most Chinese American restaurants, but Lopez-Alt’s technique of marinating shrimp in baking soda and salt to keep it plump and juicy is a revelation, and its seasoning of Sichuan peppercorns, honey, and Shaoxing wine creates a tingling, sweet sauce that I now want to eat with everything. Like many wok dishes, it comes together almost instantly, and is inspiring me to keep a lot more frozen shrimp around so I can make this a regular part of my diet. — Jaya Saxena, senior writer

NRA opens gun convention in Texas after school massacre - The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) — The National Rifle Association begins its annual convention in Houston on Friday, and leaders of the powerful gun-rights lobbying group are gearing up to “reflect on” — and deflect any blame for — the deadly shooting earlier this week of 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Former President Donald Trump and other leading Republicans are scheduled to address the three-day firearms marketing and advocacy event, which is expected to draw protesters fed up with gun violence.

Some scheduled speakers and performers have backed out, including two Texas lawmakers and “American Pie” singer Don McLean, who said “it would be disrespectful” to go ahead with his act in the aftermath of the country’s latest mass shooting.

While President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have renewed calls for stricter gun laws, NRA board member Phil Journey said the focus should be on better mental health care and trying to prevent gun violence. He said he wouldn’t support banning or limiting access to firearms.

The NRA said in an online statement that people attending the gun show will “reflect on” the Uvalde school shooting, “pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.”

People planning to attend picked up registration badges Thursday and shopped for NRA souvenirs, such as T-shirts that say “Suns Out Guns Out.” Police already had set up metal barriers across the street from the convention center, at a park where protesters are expected to gather Friday.

Gary Francis traveled with his wife and friends from Racine, Wisconsin, to attend the NRA meeting. He said he opposed any gun control regulations in response to the Uvalde shooting.

“What happened there is obviously tragic,” he said. “But the NRA had nothing to do with it. The people who come here had nothing to do with it.”

Texas has experienced a series of mass shootings in recent years. During that time, the Republican-led Legislature and governor have relaxed gun laws.

There is precedent for the NRA to gather amid local mourning and controversy. The organization went ahead with a shortened version of its 1999 meeting in Denver roughly a week after the deadly shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Actor Charlton Heston, the NRA president at that time, told attendees that “horrible acts” shouldn’t become opportunities to limit constitutional rights and he denounced critics for casting NRA members as “villains.”

Rocky Marshall, a former NRA board member, said that although the tragedy in Uvalde “does put the meeting in a bad light,” that’s not a reason to cancel it. Marshall said gun-rights advocates and opponents can perhaps reduce gun violence if they focus on factors such as mental illness or school security.

“Throwing rocks at the NRA, that doesn’t solve the next mass shooting,” he said. “Throwing rocks at the people that hate guns, that doesn’t solve the next mass shooting.”

But country music singer Larry Gatlin, who pulled out of planned appearance at the event, said he hopes “the NRA will rethink some of its outdated and ill-thought-out positions.”

“While I agree with most of the positions held by the NRA, I have come to believe that, while background checks would not stop every madman with a gun, it is at the very least a step in the right direction,” Gatlin said.

Country singers Lee Greenwood and Larry Stewart also withdrew, Variety reported.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that the NRA’s leaders “are contributing to the problem of gun violence and not trying to solve it.” She accused them of representing the interests of gun manufacturers, “who are marketing weapons of war to young adults.”

Two Republican Texas lawmakers who had been scheduled speak Friday — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw — are no longer attending due to what their staffs said were changes in their schedules.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who was slated to attend, will instead address the convention by prerecorded video, his spokesman told The Dallas Morning News.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was listed as a speaker, and Trump said Wednesday that he still intends to attend. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, also is sticking to her plans to speak Friday at the NRA event.

Though personal firearms are allowed at the convention, the NRA said guns would not be permitted during the session featuring Trump because of Secret Service security protocols.

Several groups have said they planned to stage protests outside of the convention center.

“This is not the time or the place to have this convention,” said Cesar Espinosa, executive director of FIEL, a Houston-based civil rights group that plans to participate in protests. “We must not just have thoughts and prayers from legislators, but rather we need action to address this public health crisis that is affecting our communities.”

Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who is challenging Abbott in the 2022 Texas governor’s race, said he would be attending a protest outside the convention Friday.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, a Democrat, said the city is obligated to host the NRA event, which has been under contract for more than two years. But he urged politicians to skip it.

“You can’t pray and send condolences on one day and then be going and championing guns on the next. That’s wrong,” Turner said.

Shannon Watts, the founder of gun-control group Moms Demand Action, said she was not surprised the NRA is not canceling its meeting.

“The real question now is which elected officials will choose to side with violence and go kiss the ring in Houston this weekend instead of siding with communities crying out for public safety,” Watts said.

Beto O'Rourke interrupts Greg Abbott at school shooting press conference: "You are doing nothing" - CBS News

Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke interrupted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott during a press conference in Uvalde after the mass shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead.

Abbott said he would be passing the microphone to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, when O'Rourke stood up. "You are doing nothing," O'Rourke said, adding that the shooting was "totally predictable" because gun laws were not strengthened following other shootings in the state.

Patrick told O'Rourke to "sit down ... you're out of line in an embarrassing encounter" and called on O'Rourke to leave the auditorium. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who was also on stage, told O'Rourke to sit down.

"I can't believe you're a sick son of a b**** to come to a place like this to make a political issue," one of the officials onstage told O'Rourke.

Law enforcement officers appeared to escort O'Rourke out of the news conference afterward. CBS News' Janet Shamalian said it appeared that some people had saved seats for O'Rourke.

After O'Rourke was escorted out, Abbott did not address the incident directly but called for unity, saying that "every Texan, every American has a responsibility where we need to focus not on ourselves and our agendas, but we need to focus on the healing and hope that we can provide those who have suffered unconscionable damage to their lives and loss of life."

"We need all Texans in this moment in time to decide to personal agendas, think of somebody other than ourselves, think of somebody who has been hurt and help somebody who has been hurt," he continued.

After O'Rourke left, he told reporters, "these kids died because the governor of the state of Texas, the most powerful man in the state, chose to do nothing."

"After every one of these, he holds a press conference just like this – and I wish to hell when he came to El Paso that someone would have stood up and held him to account and confronted him and shocked the conscience of this state into doing something," O'Rourke said. "Because if we do nothing, we will continue to see this. Year after year, school after school, kid after kid. This is on all of us, every single one of us to do something."

During his failed presidential run in 2019, O'Rourke was an outspoken advocate for gun control measures. A former congressman, O'Rourke represented El Paso, where a gunman shot and killed 23 people

After that shooting, O'Rourke memorably said during a presidential debate, "Hell yes, we are taking your guns" about AR-15s. Abbott and other law enforcement officials stated Wednesday that the shooter in Uvalde used an AR-15.

Before O'Rourke's interruption, Abbott called for solutions to the mental health crisis in Uvalde, although he also said that the shooter had no known history of mental illness. Abbott said local officials told him that "we have a problem with mental health, illness, in this community."

Cruz later told CBS Dallas Fort Worth that O'Rourke was "acting like a peacock."

"So I got to tell you, I get tired of all the politicking. It happens every time there is a mass shooting," Cruz said.

Abbott, Cruz and O'Rourke were among the hundreds of attendees at a prayer vigil Wednesday night at the Uvalde County Fairplex arena.

5-Ingredient Recipes That Are Better and Cheaper Than Takeout - Everyday Health

Like fried rice, lo mein is relatively high in processed carbohydrates and sodium and low in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, per the USDA. But in this quick homemade version, you can add as many veggies as you’d like, and scale back the sodium. Here, coleslaw mix makes for a quick and delicious veggie without any chopping at all! Plus the cabbage in the mix is a cruciferous veggie (like kale, broccoli, and cauliflower) which means that it’s packed with antioxidants in the form of polyphenols and may have anti-inflammatory effects in the body, according to past research.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 8 oz dry lo mein noodles
  • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cups coleslaw mix
  • 1 red bell peppers, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp less sodium soy sauce
  • Optional ingredients for garnish: peanuts, scallions, lime wedges, sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook lo mein noodles according to package directions. Drain thoroughly and rinse with cold water to stop cooking.
  2. Meanwhile, place a large wok or deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, coleslaw mix, bell pepper, and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are tender and coleslaw begins to brown, about 4 to 6 minutes.
  3. Add noodles and soy sauce to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until noodles are heated through.
