Viral Thanksgiving Recipes to Try Something New This Season - Newsweek

As the holiday season kicks off with Thanksgiving just around the corner, many have begun planning what they intend to serve for dinner. Some may find themselves searching for inspiration on what they can prepare and have turned to social media for recipes.

TikTok has served as a space for creators to share some of their recipes, some of which have gone viral. At the time of publication, videos with the hashtag "thanksgivingrecipes" have a combined total of 170 million views.

Jenna Helwig, the food director for Real Simple, told Newsweek in an email that social media may encourage people to begin planning their dinners early.

"When you see those Thanksgiving Reels or TikToks rolling out the day after Halloween, it gets those menu planning wheels turning," she said.

Annie Campbell, associate editor for Allrecipes told Newsweek in an email that the holidays seem to be starting earlier than ever on social media.

"With so much time to prepare and gather inspiration, I think holiday dinners will involve more creativity and experimentation than years past," Campbell said. "If a video stops you in your tracks, that's usually enough incentive to get it on your own table. Think of that one dish that looked so unbelievably delicious on your [For You Page], you immediately saved it and sent it to a friend. Now, you have a plan for a dish you're excited to execute and someone to share it with."

She noted that cooking videos go through each step in the process, making recipes—even those that once seemed daunting—seem more approachable and less complicated.

So, what are some of the most popular appetizers, sides and desserts that viewers are seeing this year on TikTok?

Appetizers

Those putting out pre-meal snacks can find quick and easy recipes that show the step-by-step cooking process on TikTok.

TikTok user @thepalatablelife shared a video that was viewed nearly 400,000 times showing how to make pumpkin-spiced candied nuts.

Combining water, brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice in a pan, she brought the mixture to a boil just before adding the nuts.

Once the liquid is nearly cooked off, chefs are encouraged to spread them out on a pan to allow them to cool. The final touch is adding some flaky salt.

Another TikTok video, shared by @jordynn.ann, was viewed more than 350,000 times as it was dubbed the "perfect fall appetizer," with the hashtag "thanksgivingappetizers" included in the caption.

She sliced a bulb of garlic in half and nestled it with cherry tomatoes and rosemary in a skillet. Popping it in the oven, the dish cooks for about 40 minutes, or until it gets blistered.

The garlic is then added to sticks of butter, which is spread over toasted bread with the blistered tomatoes sitting atop.

Sides

Not to be outshined by the turkey on the dinner table, many find the sides to be just as delicious as the star of the show on Thanksgiving.

Macaroni and cheese is a favorite for families, and TikTok user @moribyan's video shows how she achieved the creamy side dish that amassed more than one million views.

She added heavy cream, minced garlic, cream cheese and spices to the roux, along with three types of shredded cheese. That mixture was combined with cooked macaroni, and it was placed in a dish to be baked in the oven.

At the end of the cooking process, @moribyan turned the oven's broiler on to give the macaroni and cheese a crispy top.

With more than 420,000 views, TikTok user @thatguywywy's video on how to prepare "green bean bundles" also went viral.

Fresh green beans are added to salted boiling water for about four minutes before they are plunged into ice water to stop the cooking process.

In a measuring cup, @thatguywywy added finely chopped garlic, brown sugar and hoisin sauce to melted salted butter. He then wrapped bundles of green beans in strips of bacon and arranged them on a lined sheet pan.

After drizzling the bundles with the butter mixture, @thatguywywy popped the tray into the oven and let the green beans cook for 30 minutes.

Desserts

Even after a day of incredible food, there is always room for dessert.

TikTok user @oh_my_foodness shared a video viewed nearly 750,000 times showing how he made puff pastry apple rings.

He peeled and sliced apples to make apple rings and covered them with cinnamon and sugar. @oh_my_foodness wrapped each ring with strips of puff pastry and topped them with some milk and cane sugar.

After baking the rings, @oh_my_foodness dusted them with powdered sugar.

Departing from the classic pumpkin pie, @livingwithlady posted a video that was viewed more than 300,000 times showing how she makes a pumpkin spice earthquake cake.

Using a boxed cake mix to make the recipe, she added some pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin puree and softened cream cheese.

Chocolate chips were sprinkled on top before the cake began baking in the oven.

These are just a handful of recipes that have been published on social media, and Campbell said she's been inspired by social media to make a dish that she saved for Thanksgiving.

"Last year, I made a dairy-free spinach artichoke dip from @sweetsimplevegan that was a huge hit," she said. "I'd like to say it was so good I'll be making it again, but now I have dozens of new recipes saved to my 'thanksgiving ideas' board to try out instead."

Staple Recipes and Ingredients

Viral recipes aside, there are some classic dishes Campbell and Helwig recommend.

Helwig said she is a fan of putting a twist on some classics, like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy. She also said some of the ingredients that are best to have on hand are butter, boxed chicken broth and plenty of fresh herbs.

Campbell said she's a fan of Allrecipes' "Apple Pie by Grandma Ople" recipe and has made it every year.

As far as staple ingredients, she suggested chicken broth and a can of pumpkin will be good to have on hand for simple desserts.

"You could call it the unsung hero of Thanksgiving dinner," Campbell said. "A good chicken or vegetable broth does wonders to prevent the number one issue we see in side dishes: too dry."

Helwig said it's ideal to try a recipe at least once before serving it to family and friends, but encouraged cooks to try something new, even if they don't have the time to test it.

"If it doesn't work out, there will be plenty of other food on the table," she said.
